Milt Hinton (three photos) By Al Stewart
Affectionately nicknamed as “The Judge” and respected in every area of music
since the 1920’s. Toured with Count Basie and Louis Armstrong before joining
CBS in 1954, he helped and encouraged young musicians and imparted them with
his knowledge. The Judge played the White House for President Nixon’s tribute to
Duke Ellington and in subsequent trips for both Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan.
Of these three personal shots, Stewart reflects that the one is from Hinton playing
at Basin Street East, a jazz club in New York, where “we were rehearsing with
Lena Horne for an upcoming appearance.”
