Ernst Maxime was born on June 8th, 1959 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the eldest of four children. He studied at the Collège Frère Adrien du Sacré-Cœur with his secondary studies at the Lycée Pétion until the second year of secondary school, before transitioning to study electrical services at the St-Gérard school. A chance meeting with Paul Nemours in 1975 led him to begin painting, influenced by his surroundings and the prevalent “Naive” style, with later studies under Fritz St-Jean. Describing himself as an impressionist, his works evolved to focus primarily on animals, landscapes, and jungles, with his first major showing at the Port-au-Prince Art Center in 1984, represented by Reynold Marcelin. He has continued to produce new pieces ever since, with his whimsical combination of artistic styles and mediums garnering him an international audience.
