(3) Books About Massachusetts & Manhattan 1930's. A) The Merrimack Archaeological Society - A Preliminary Paper by Warren King Moorehead, With Supplementary Notes by Benjamin L. Smith on the Concord Valley, published by the Peabody Museum, Salem Massachusetts 1931 and printed by the Andover Press in Andover, Mass., in soft gray wrappers, with a Table of Contents, 79 pages long, with photos, illustrations, and a fold-out map of archaeological Indian sites that cover Lowell, Mass. to Manchester, N.H. This book is based on archaeological digs conducted in 1930 in the Merrimack Valley of Massachusetts; the purpose of the expedition to the Merrimack Valley was to identify Indian villages and to preserve the legacy and heritage of many of these sites that had all but been annihilated during Colonial times, when English settlers were staking their claims to the land in the Merrimack basin. Some sites were built by Native Americans near rivers and water falls because these were prime fishing stations, and many of the artifacts recovered and pictured here come from those sites; these include arrowheads, axes, and a variety of tools and projectiles used for hunting and gathering. The book measures 9 7/8 x 6 3/4 in. wide and is in very good condition, with a tight binding and clean text and pages, and just light browning along the left edge of the front cover. B) In old America, Random Chapters on the Early Aborigines, By Walter Hart Blumenthal, With A Foreword By George Alexander Kohl, Walton Book Company, New York 1931, green boards with gilt titles on the spins and front cover, blank endpapers, a copyright date of 1930, this is a presentation copy signed on a yellow note and inscribed "To James D. Harrison, With friendly greetings from a more than-ever Republican, Walter Hart Blumenthal", the note is on a separate paper inserted in between the front endpapers; there is a one-page Foreword, a one-page Introduction, a Contents page, and 79 pages of text with footnotes, and a dustjacket with the original $2 price on the front flap and a brief bio of Walter Blumenthal on the rear flap, and esoteric capture titles such as "False Messiahs and Psychic Frenzies", "The Sacred Number Seven", and "The New World Origin of Syphilis". The book measures 9 1/2 x 6 1/4 in. wide and is a very attractive copy with bright gilt lettering on the boards and just a bit of soiling on the spine of the dust jacket and two clips along the top edge of the jacket in the front. Blumenthal (1883-1969) was a Jewish American scholar, writer and editor who was born in Clinton, Iowa and the son of noted book collector Hart Blumenthal, and was the author of more than thirty books on a wide range of subjects, including etymology, women of the American Revolution, and the plight of the Native Americans who had fraudulent land concessions forced on them ("American Indians Dispossessed: Fraud in Land Cessions Forced Upon the Tribes" 1955). He also wrote in Old America: The Lost Tribes of Israel, and his papers are now housed at the American Jewish Archives in Cincinnati, Ohio and at the Center of Jewish History in New York City, and he wrote short stories and poetry. C) The Indians of Manhattan Island And Vicinity, By Alanson Skinner, Fifth Edition, Guide Leaflet Series No.41, The American Museum Of Natural History, New York, January, 1932, with a frontis portrait of "A Mahikan Indian Chief From The Hudson River Below Albany", salmon colored wraps, 64 pages of text, including maps and photos of arrow points, knives and scrapers, drills, stones axes, gorgets, and amulets. The book measures 9 3/4 x 6 3/4 in. wide and is in very good condition, with a tight binding, clean pages and photos, and just light wear at the crown and a smidge at the heel, and small curls of creases at the tips. A good archaeological study about Native Americans and Manhattan published by one of the top museums in the country, for a history buff who really appreciates the part. The book is scarce, with only nine copies published between 1909 and 1932 offered online. #43 #1704
