(3) Antique English Doulton Lambeth Ceramic Motto Ware Mugs. Each has a curved handle and flared base with a straight-edged mouth and darker color painted around the top than the main body. One has two areas of raised leaf pattern decorations bookending the words "Disdain me not - It is most true - I am of clay - And so are you" in the middle. One has a raised decorative green leaf pattern at the bottom edge with the words "In times of prosperity - Friends will be plenty - In times of adversity - Not one in twenty" above it. The last one has no raised decorations and the words "There's many a slip - Twixt the cup and the lip" in the middle area. All marked on the undersides.

Motto jugs, or "motto ware," are ceramic pieces decorated with wise, humorous, or inspirational sayings that first appeared in 19th-century England. The style reached its peak in popularity during the early 20th century in both England and the United States, with early pieces featuring simple stoneware and short sayings. Although the mainstream favored minimalism after the mid-20th century, certain elaborate examples from makers like Royal Doulton remain sought after by collectors, sustaining the tradition.
