Henry Birks was born in Montreal, Canada on November 30th, 1840, first working as a clerk and later partner at the watchmaker and jeweller Savage and Lyman before striking out on his own. In 1879 he invested C$3,000 to open his own jewelry shop on Saint James Street, right in the heart of Montreal’s commercial district, and later founded Henry Birks and Sons in 1893, which grew into a prestigious nationwide chain of high-end jewelry stores with the help of his children William, John, and Gerald. His family's multi-generational legacy continues to this day, with his son Gerald devising an educational system for Canadian soldiers known as the Khaki University which was implemented in 1917, and after his death on April 16th, 1928 his name was honored on the campus of McGill University via the William and Henry Birks Building.
