Uniquely stylized geometric female figure, made entirely of serpentine, artist unknown.
The Shona sculptural movement has been gaining international recognition since the mid-20th century. Utilizing stone derived from the Serpentine family, found in abundance in the Great Dyke Mountain Pass of Zimbabwe, Shona sculptors hold their medium in high esteem and have described the importance of allowing the material to reveal the beauty within. Popular subjects in Shona sculpture include totemic figures, local fauna and flora, and traditional Shona mythology.
