Jimmy Ernst was born in 1920, the son of German surrealist Max Ernst, and initially avoided art but began painting at twenty in a style of his own. Raised in Cologne by his Jewish mother, journalist Louise Straus, he developed strong ethics and fled Nazi Germany in 1938, just before Kristallnacht; his mother later died in a concentration camp. In the United States he worked at the Museum of Modern Art and as Peggy Guggenheim’s assistant, later teaching at several institutions including Brooklyn College and Pratt Institute. Known for his use of automatism and a vibrant "jazz" period, his work evolved into controlled black-and-white compositions. He traveled through Europe and Russia on grants, and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1983. He died in 1984 at age 63, leaving behind a massive body of influential abstract art and two children who also became artists, Amy Louise and Eric.
