(2) Wedgwood Pottery Jasperware Decoration. Lot of two Wedgewood Jasperware items, including decorative plate and plaque with two classical figures.
Largest Size: 9 1/2 x 12 3/4 in.
Wedgwood Jasperware, developed by English potter Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s, is a distinctive type of stoneware celebrated for its matte finish and classical elegance. Characterized by its unglazed, colored body—most famously in pale blue, though also produced in green, lilac, and black—it features contrasting white relief decorations inspired by Greco-Roman art, depicting mythological scenes, laurel wreaths, and cameos. The material itself, a fine-grained ceramic resembling porcelain, was an innovative achievement of the Industrial Revolution, combining beauty with durability. Jasperware became a symbol of neoclassical taste and refinement, adorning everything from vases and plaques to jewelry and tableware, and remains one of Wedgwood’s most enduring and recognizable contributions to decorative art.
