Founded in 1898 in Newark, New Jersey, by inventor Louis V. Aronson as The Art Metal Works, Ronson Consumer Products Corporation initially manufactured decorative cast metal items such as lamps, bookends, and statues. The company pivoted heavily toward flame technology after Aronson invented early safety matches and spark igniters, debuting its first pocket lighter, the Wonderliter, in 1913. In 1926 the firm introduced the revolutionary “Banjo” lighter, the world’s first automatic lighter operating with a single push, and rebranded as Ronson to capitalize on its instant global popularity. Over the decades Ronson expanded into butane lighters, torch tools, and lighter fluid, establishing a legacy of mechanical reliability that led to its eventual acquisition by the Zippo Manufacturing Company in 2010.
