They are descendants of Indigenous Andean populations and are closely associated with the culture and language of the Inca civilization, whose empire once stretched across much of western South America before the arrival of the Francisco Pizarro and the Spanish in the 16th century. Many Quechua people still speak the Quechua language family, practice traditional farming in high mountain regions, and maintain cultural traditions such as weaving, music, and festivals that reflect both ancient Andean beliefs and later Spanish influences.
