Foo dogs, also known as Fu lions, guardian lions, or Shishi, are traditional Chinese architectural ornaments that resemble stylized lions. These statues are believed to have powerful protective properties and are often placed at the entrance of temples, palaces, and other significant buildings to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. Typically depicted in pairs, the male lion, often with a ball under his paw, symbolizes power and protection, while the female, with a cub under her paw, represents nurturing and the cycle of life. Originating from ancient Chinese culture, foo dogs have been adopted in other Asian cultures and continue to be a popular motif in art and architecture, symbolizing strength, protection, and prosperity.
