Raku ware is a type of Japanese pottery known for its distinctive, hand-formed shapes and a special firing technique where red-hot glazed pieces are removed from the kiln and placed in combustible materials like sawdust to cool. This process creates unique, unpredictable surface effects, such as crackling, metallic lusters, and smoky colors. Traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies since the 16th Century, with major shifts into a more Western style and purpose in the 20th Century, raku ware continues to reflect the philosophy of wabi-sabi, or the beauty of imperfection and transience.
