Steuben Glass, founded in 1903 by Frederick Carder and Thomas G. Hawkes in Corning, New York, was named after Steuben County and became part of Corning Glass Works in 1918 due to wartime material shortages. After the Great Depression forced a shift to primarily colorless art glass, Steuben changed ownership in 2008 to Schottenstein Stores, which closed its Corning factory and Manhattan store in 2011, ending the company’s 108-year history. Corning Incorporated later repurchased the Steuben brand, and by 2014 the Corning Museum of Glass began working with independent contractors to reproduce Steuben using a new lead-free formula alongside the classic leaded crystal.
