Wycinanki is the traditional Polish folk art of decorative papercutting, in which brightly colored paper is cut—often with scissors or sheep shears—into intricate, symmetrical designs that are layered or displayed as wall and window decorations. Emerging in rural Poland in the 19th century, it developed as a domestic craft among villagers, especially in regions such as Łowicz and Kurpie, where distinct styles evolved ranging from multicolored floral compositions to monochrome, highly symmetrical geometric patterns. Common motifs include birds (especially roosters), flowers, trees, stars, and scenes of village life, often arranged in circular or repeating compositions that emphasize balance and rhythm. Originally used to brighten and symbolically “protect” the interiors of peasant homes, wycinanki remains an important expression of Polish folk heritage and is still practiced today by contemporary artists and craft traditions.
