Mihai Topescu was born in Ticlenie, Romania in 1956, and studied art at Cluj University before discovering a lifelong passion for glass sculpting. Originally drawn to traditional forms, he was first exposed to more abstract works in the early 1980s, as Soviet era restrictions began to crumble and loosen, and by the 90s he was traveling extensively throughout Europe exhibiting his hand-blown vases, bowls, paperweights, and other installations, often incorporating metal, wood, stone, and other materials into his pieces. Today he lives and works in the town of Targu-Jiu, still making pieces by hand that are sought by collectors around the world.
