Mid-century modern (MCM) is a movement in interior design, product design, graphic design, art, architecture, and urban development that began to develop roughly between 1945 and 1970. It was most popular in North America, Brazil, and Europe due to economic and social shifts in the post-World War II period, but was present in various ways all around the world. The term was used as early as the mid-1950s, and was first formally defined as a design movement by Cara Greenberg in her 1984 book “Mid-Century Modern: Furniture of the 1950s.” It is now recognized by scholars and museums worldwide as a significant design movement, concurrent with the Modernist and minimalist movements, with which it shared many aesthetic components. It is typically characterized by clean, simple lines and honest use of materials, and generally does not include decorative embellishments. Another significant aspect was the embrace of newer materials such as acrylics and aluminum for most if not all of the works. Critics believe the mid-century modern movement was an American reflection of the International and Bauhaus movements, including the works of Gropius, Florence Knoll, Le Corbusier, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Brazilian and Scandinavian architects were very influential at this time, with a long-lasting impact on conceptual aspects of engineering and art into the 21st Century developed by the Structuralists and New Brutalists. California in particular retains many of the architectural and sculptural results of mid-century modern, with the city of Palm Springs especially noted for its myriad examples. Brazil is the only country in the world where an entire city (and the country’s capital), Brasília, was built entirely in the mid-century modern style, inaugurated in 1961. The Danish Modern movement that evolved directly from mid-century modern is still popular today, most clearly through the proliferation of the retail giant IKEA.
