The word table is derived from Old English tabele, derived from the Latin word tabula (“a board, plank, flat top piece”), which replaced the Old English bord; its current spelling reflects the influence of the French table. Although tables in one form or another are likely older than the wheel or even the invention of fire, the earliest surviving examples of formed and fashioned tables (as opposed to rock or wood surfaces smoothed naturally by nature and the elements) have been found in Ancient Egyptian tombs, as well as written descriptions from even earlier eras in China and Mesopotamia. The earliest civilizations to incorporate glass surfaces into their tables appear to be ancient Greeks or early Romans, based on fragmentary descriptions in texts, although no examples survive from these eras. By the mid 18th Century, significant advancements in glassmaking allowed it to replace marble as the most common tabletop addition to cover the stone or wood beneath.
