Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was an American artist born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and grew up in Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish community. Determined to become a sculptor from age 15, he apprenticed with Maurice Glickman and held his first solo exhibition while still a teenager. Baskin studied at New York University, Yale, and later in Paris and Florence, founding the Gehenna Press, one of America’s first fine arts presses, which paired his dramatic black-and-white prints with works by poets like Sylvia Plath and James Baldwin. A figurative artist, his work often explored mortality, Judaism, and the Holocaust. He taught printmaking and sculpture at Smith College for two decades and later at Hampshire College, influencing generations of artists. Baskin’s work is in major institutions worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Vatican Museums. He received six honorary doctorates, numerous awards, and died on June 3, 2000, in Northampton, Massachusetts.
