Founded in 1889 by Walter Scott Lenox in New Jersey, Lenox quickly became the most prestigious American maker of tableware, gaining renown for its hand-painted quality and producing china services for multiple U.S. White House administrations. Over the 20th century, the company grew into a mega-corporation, acquiring major brands like Dansk and Reed & Barton, though it passed through several ownership changes and filed for bankruptcy in 2008. Despite being the last significant American bone china manufacturer, the company was forced to close its final U.S. factory in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was later acquired by a private equity firm that also absorbed former competitor Oneida Limited.
