Lot comprised of two Japanese woodblock prints. Pieces include:
- "Woman With Attendants", by Kitagawa Utamaro
- "Oiran and an Attendnat of the Higashina Ogiya at Shinmachi Osaka", by Choki
Japanese woodblock art, known as **ukiyo-e**, emerged during the Edo period (1603-1868). These prints depicted scenes of everyday life, landscapes, kabuki actors, and courtesans, reflecting the vibrant culture of the time. The technique involved carving images into wooden blocks, inking them, and pressing them onto paper, allowing for mass production and wide distribution.
Key artists include **Hokusai**, famous for "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," and **Hiroshige**, known for his series "The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō." Ukiyo-e influenced Western art, particularly the Impressionists, with its use of bold lines, vivid colors, and innovative compositions.
