Malatesta & Mason were a 1950s design partnership based out of Rome, Italy, known for creating sculptural, organic mid-century modern furniture, particularly armchairs featuring curved walnut or beechwood frames. Their work, often featuring high backs and velvet upholstery as well as highly biomorphic forms, was produced in Italy between the 1940s and 1960s, with pieces featured in design literature like “Decorative Art 50s,” famously combining Italian craftsmanship with Scandinavian functionalism. Due to poor record-keeping after World War II, specific personal details about the designers themselves remain scarce, but their pieces, particularly the 1950s armchairs, have sold at auction houses for upwards of $4,000.
