(2) Indo-Pacific White Knobby Starfish Sea Stars. Excellent large specimens.
Largest Size: 10 x 6 x 3 in.
White knobby starfish (often known as Protoreaster nodosus, chocolate chip starfish, or thorny starfish) are natural, dried, and bleached sea stars popular for coastal decor, weddings, and crafting due to their durable, distinctively bumpy appearance. They are generally off-white to cream-colored, range from 1 to 10 inches in length, and are favored for DIY projects, though laws have been passed in some areas to prevent their depletion by harvesting for aquariums. Common to the Indo-Pacific region, they feed on small organisms and detritus near shorelines, particularly along seagrass beds, and are sometimes confused for a similar yet distinct genus also known as a Knobby Star (Pisaster giganteus) that is found along the western coast of North America.
