(2) French Porcelain Jardinieres. Lot comprised of two French hand-painted porcelain jardinieres, one with classically painted putti or cherub in garden against a dark blue body with gilt ribbon decoration verso; one with gold painted leaves. Gilt rims and handles on four feet. Marked on base, France.

Size: 12 1/2 x 6 x 4 3/4 in.

 

Jardinieres are decorative containers or planters designed to hold and display indoor or outdoor plants, often serving as elegant focal points in gardens, sunrooms, or interiors. Originating in Europe and gaining popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries, they range in style from ornate porcelain and cast iron to carved wood and glazed ceramic. Many feature classical motifs, floral designs, or Art Nouveau curves, and can be freestanding on pedestal bases or designed to sit on tabletops or window ledges. Beyond their practical use, jardinieres are valued for their ability to harmonize greenery with decorative artistry, adding a cultivated and timeless touch to any space.
