In 1800 William Hutton established himself as a silversmith in Birmingham, and transferred to Sheffield in 1832, becoming Hutton and Houghton. After his death the business was continued by his son William Carr Hutton until 1864, when the name was changed to William Hutton & Son. This was a partnership of William Carr Hutton and his youngest son Herbert Hutton. William Carr Hutton died in 1865 and Herbert was joined by his brothers James Edward Hutton and Robert, and the name was changed to William Hutton & Sons when they opened an additional showroom in London. In 1893 the firm acquired Rupert Favell & Co and in the same year became William Hutton & Sons Ltd. The firm acquired Creswick & Co in 1902, beginning to use their crossed arrows marks. The last Hutton family leader was Herbert Hutton Jr., who handled the company until it declared bankruptcy in 1930, and its assets were absorbed by James Dixon & Sons. The markings on this piece indicate that it came from the Birmingham location in 1922.
