(2) American and (1) Italian Hand Carved and Painted Duck Decoys. The smallest one is a goose, with a felt underside and a label reading "Malevolti Italy" with a company logo, clearly repurposed as interior decoration rather than for use in hunting. The second largest is a canvasback duck, signed on the underside by P. Begner and branded with "A Wooden Bird Factory" company logo in the middle, dated '82 at the bottom of it. The largest piece is unmarked, but its incredible use of wood grain with a green sheen and the twistable head indicate it came from Objets d'Duck in Pheonix, Arizona, and is highly sought by collectors in its own right.
Largest Size: 9 1/2 x 4 x 5 in.
Duck decoys are man-made objects resembling ducks, used for thousands of years in hunting by cultures worldwide, including ancient Egyptians, Indigenous Australians, and Native Americans. In North America, highly detailed wooden decoys became popular in the 19th–20th centuries, later replaced by papier-mâché, plastic, and motion decoys with spinning wings. Beyond hunting, they are now collected as North American folk art, with rare examples selling for over $1 million.
