The Carl Tielsch & Co. Porcelain Manufactury was founded in 1845 in Altwasser, Lower Silesia, Prussia by Carl Robert Tielsch (1815-1882), a German merchant who partnered with a rich banker named Gideon von Wallenberg to create works that would compete with a fellow entrepreneur, Carl Krister. They attained quick success by having an exceptionally large product range from the start, and by 1861 the porcelain was so highly sought after throughout the German Empire that Tielsch was awarded the title of Prussian Royal Trade Counsellor in recognition of his contribution to the Silesian economy and industry. His son Egmont became his successor after his death, and the company remained in family control through many European conflicts until the beginning of World War II. Today, the region is now part of Poland, with the factory still producing goods under the name Fabryka Porcelany Wałbrzych S.A., but all marked “P.T. Tielsch Wałbrzych” in honor of their origins.
