19th Century French Champleve Enamel, Onyx, and Bronze Pedestal Stand. Mulicolored French bronze and champleve enamel column with onyx plinths.
Size: 12 1/4 x 5 x 5 in.
Champlevé enamel is a decorative technique in which recesses are carved, cast, or etched into a metal surface and then filled with colored enamel, which is fired and polished to create a smooth, jewel-like finish. Popular in medieval Europe, especially in France during the 12th and 13th centuries, champlevé was often applied to religious objects such as reliquaries, crosses, and altar pieces, with copper or bronze as the usual base metal. The vibrant enamel colors—typically deep blues, greens, reds, and whites—contrasted beautifully with the gleam of gilded surfaces, producing rich and intricate designs. Valued for its durability and brilliance, champlevé enamel remains an enduring example of the marriage between metalwork and artistry in decorative traditions.
