19th Century European Portrait of a Lady, Oil on Canvas. This exquisite portrait depicts an elegant young woman wearing a stylish white hooded cloak with red lining and trim, buttons and tassels. The mysterious dark haired beauty appears to be of indistinct European origin, with noble features and a serene countenance. Artist unknown, no visible signature. Oil on canvas, painting has been relined and restored, with minimal in-painting, good condition overall. Housed in a period American frame. Remnant of label on stretcher bars and handwriting on back of frame indicate this picture once belonged to N. M. Vose of Providence, Rhode Island. His grandfather, Joseph Vose, founded Vose Galleries in 1841. Currently based in Boston, Vose Galleries has dealt in fine art for six generations. Their paintings now hang in almost every major American museum.
