19th Century Carved Wooden Pig with Brass and Copper Highlights. Mostly wooden boar with metal for eyes, ears, and tail. A delightful creature. 

Condition: Commensurate with age. 

Size: 17 x 5 x 10 1/4 in. 

In the 19th Century a massive influx of European immigrants to the United States fleeing civil unrest led to the rapid expansion of cities on the East Coast and the Midwest. Many were from the lower classes, and brought their skills to the new world, primarily in textiles, agriculture, and the raising and slaughter of animals. Wild boars, not commonly found in America, became highly prized and sought after for eating by those longing for the treat so readily available back in Europe. Butchers throughout the country began using the image of the pig on their signs and in front of their shops to entice these new customers to come in. 

This particular carved pig closely resembles ones used by Montag’s Meat Market in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, likely meaning it was carved and fashioned with the bright hand-hammered accouterments by a craftsman (possibly even one of the aforementioned immigrants) for this very purpose.
