Late 19th century. Titled "Hampstead Heath". Signed and inscribed "Hampsted East End John Hodson" on the lower horizontal stretcher bar, and dated August 1881 on the upper horizontal stretcher bar. Original package (Stretcher and Frame appear to be of the same age).
The present work is presumably by the J. Hodson listed in J. Johnson and A. Greutzner, 'The Dictionary of British Artists 1880-1940', p.252, as having exhibited in 1883 and residing at 49 Park Road in Hampstead. The charming scene depicts a summer's day on Hampstead Heath, the wild terrain almost unoccupied apart from two girls collecting wildflowers in the lower right corner, almost indistinguishable from the landscape around them.
