The Chicago Merchandise Mart (known locally as the Merch Mart, or simply the Mart) is a commercial building in downtown Chicago, Illinois. Built by Marshall Field & Co. in 1930 it was the world’s largest building at the time, with 4 million square feet of floor space. The Art Deco structure is at the junction of the Chicago River’s branches, and was so large that it had its own zip code until 2008. The home of several enterprises, including the Chicago campus of the Illinois Institute of Art and Grainger Technology Group, it continues to remain a leading retailing and wholesale location, hosting 20,000 visitors and tenants daily into the late 2000s.
