Poljot, meaning “flight,” is a premier Soviet/Russian watch brand produced by the First Moscow Watch Factory since 1964. The factory was established in 1930 using equipment and technical designs purchased from the defunct American Dueber-Hampden Watch Company, and Poljot became the flagship brand of the USSR’s watch industry when it took a legendary place in history for supplying the world’s first space watch, a Sturmanskie, worn by Yuri Gagarin during his 1961 mission. Throughout the 20th Century the company evolved from producing military-only timepieces to manufacturing over a million consumer watches annually, and while the original factory was broken up and sold in the late 2000s, its legacy continues through brands like Volmax, which maintains the rights to these historic space-faring designs and is comprised of the remnants of the First Moscow Watch Factory, purchased and still run by former Poljot employees and their descendants.
