Taylor Instrument Company was an American manufacturer that originated as a drugstore called Kendall & Taylor, founded in 1851 in Rochester, New York by inventor George Taylor and pharmacist David Kendall with a focus on making and providing thermometers. Their rapid success allowed them to quickly expand into making barometers and other process controls, and after Taylor’s death in 1889 his sons Frank and George took over the company, first naming it Taylor Brothers before settling on the final name. They were famous through most of the early 20th Century for their precision scales and implements for weather, homes, and industries, and even produced critical altimeters for World War I and uranium processing controls for the Manhattan Project. A decline in their market share after World War II led the company to be merged with Sybron Corporation in 1968, followed by an acquisition by Combustion Engineering in 1983 and finally being absorbed into ABB in 1990, with the Rochester facility permanently closed in 1992. ABB Kent-Taylor and Taylor USA continue to produce some goods based on their original designs, continuing the legacy of the company to this day.
