Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652), or Lo Spagnoletto, was a Spanish-born Baroque painter and printmaker who spent most of his career in Naples. A leading figure in 17th-century naturalism, he was renowned for his dramatic use of chiaroscuro (stark contrast of light and shadow). Influenced by Caravaggio, Ribera infused his subjects—saints, philosophers, and martyrs—with intense psychological presence and unflinching realism. His widely circulated paintings and etchings cemented his reputation as a master interpreter of suffering and humanity, greatly influencing both Spanish and Italian art.
