(14) American Louis XV Pattern Sterling Silver Spoons - 10.400 ozt. The pattern, first introduced by Whiting Manufacturing Company around 1891, features ornate floral and scroll side decorations up the handle all the way up the stem, and was utilized by several other companies over the following century as their dies were acquired in different mergers. Some with a gold wash on the bowls, most coffee or tea spoons with one larger serving spoon and one a pierced oval bowl serving spoon. Half of the small spoons and the large spoon have monograms, and are a mix of antique and vintage.

Largest: 1 3/4 x 8 1/4 in.

Weight: 10.400 ozt.

Whiting Manufacturing Co traces its origin to the firm Tifft & Whiting formed in 1840 by Albert C. Tifft and William Dean Whiting. After the retirement of Tifft the firm changed to Whiting & Gooding (& Co) in 1853, Whiting Fessenden & Cowan (1858), Tifft Whiting & Co (1859, after Tifft re-entered the company), Whiting Cowan & Bowen (1864), and finally its longest and final incarnation as Whiting Manufacturing Co in 1866. Whiting had relatively small production output but produced exceptional handmade silverware that was highly sought by people throughout New England, with their most famous and important designer being Charles Osborne, a disciple of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The factory, located in North Attleboro, Massachusetts, was destroyed by a fire in 1875, and what was salvaged from the ruins was acquired by Fred Jones and production was transferred to New York, combining its manufacturing operations and offices into one building at 692-694 Broadway at Fourth Street. The company was purchased by Gorham in 1924 and the production transferred to Providence, Rhode Island, with no further items produced with their mark after 1926.
