T.G. Hawkes & Company was founded in 1880 by Irish immigrant Thomas Gibbons Hawkes in Corning, New York. Renowned for its intricate hand-cut crystal, it became one of the most prestigious glassmakers, playing a major part in the American Brilliant Cut Glass Period and winning the Grand Prize at the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris, putting American-made crystal on the global map. The company’s exceptional quality earned commissions from royalty and high society, providing glassware for the White House from 1885 through 1938, and their revolutionary line of “Gravic Glass” introduced in 1903 utilized stone-wheel engraving to create naturalistic, matte-finish designs. Seeking more control over his supply of high-quality glass blanks, Hawkes convinced English designer Frederick Carder to co-found the Steuben Glass Works that same year, and the company continued as a family business after Hawkes passed away in 1913 under his son Samuel until it closed in 1962. Today, the heritage brand is based in Tiffin, Ohio, where master cutters continue to craft their intricate designs after the Tiffin Glass Company bought out their trademark.
