Excavated from the New Jersey coast, these arrowheads are believed to be from the Lenni Lenape tribe where George Washington is known for crossing the Delaware River. They were part of the Algonquian linguistic stock, and their closest relatives were the Nanticoke, Conoy, and Powhatan Indians to the south and the Mahican, Wappinger, and southern New England Indians on the north. The Lenni Lenape occupied all of the State of New Jersay, the western end of Long Island, all of Staten and Manhattan Islands and neighboring parts of the mainland, along with other portions of New York west of the Hudson, and parts of eastern Pennsylvania, and northern Delaware. The British colonist began to call the Lenape the Delaware Indians because of where they live.
