The Franklin Mint is a private mint founded by Joseph Segel in 1964 in Wawa, Pennsylvania. Its product line began with manufacturing and marketing privately minted gold and silver commemorative rounds and medallions, eventually expanding to sell coins, medals, jewelry, die-cast vehicles, dolls, sculptures, and other collectibles. Many of these items were sold through magazine and television advertisements over the years, often bearing celebrity images or displaying special events or celebratory moments. After numerous changes in ownership in the 1980s and 90s, it was acquired by Retail Ecommerce Ventures (REV) in July 2020.
“The Twelve Days of Christmas” is an English Christmas carol and cumulative song, where the lyrics detail a series of increasingly numerous gifts given to the speaker by their “true love” on each of the Twelve Days of Christmas, starting on Christmas Day. The lyrics first appeared in the 1780s, with numerous melodies associated with them until the 1909 version by Frederic Austin became the universal standard.
This spoon set was first produced in 1972, with each spoon holding a coin at the base depicting the gift bestowed by the true love on that particular Christmas day.
Carlos Sierra-Franco was born in 1919 in Guatemala City, where he attended the Academy of Art and obtained his Masters Degree. He married Barbara Schwab in 1961 and emigrated to the United States with her two years later, settling in Upper Merion Township in Pennsylvania. He worked as a graphic artist, winning awards for his art, creative writing, and poetry, with solo exhibits in museums and galleries in Europe and the Americas. Towards the end of his life he taught art and photography for local schools, retiring in 1996 and passing away in 2000.
