(10) Gilded Age English Coalport Porcelain Dinner Plates Made for American Market. Light green and gilt features, elegantly designed with a gently scalloped edge and acanthus leaves. Likely dates to around 1900. Specifically retailed by Davis Collamore & Co. Ltd. in New York, as indicated by the red mark around the original blue Coalport mark on the undersides. Likely dates to around 1900.

Founded by Massachusetts native Davis Collamore after relocating to New York City, Davis Collamore & Co. emerged in 1842 as a premier high-end importer of glass and porcelain. Operating as a major rival to luxury retailers like Tiffany & Co., the firm commissioned custom, lavishly decorated tableware from elite European manufacturers like Copeland Spode and Minton. The company was also an early champion of American cut glass and served as the representative for Rookwood Pottery at the 1889 Paris Exposition. As Manhattan grew the company continuously moved its primary showrooms further uptown, eventually reaching Fifth Avenue, and even opened a branch in the affluent resort town of Newport, Rhode Island.  Collamore’s brother Gilman joined the trade in 1854 before breaking off to form his own successful luxury import firm, Gilman Collamore & Co. Despite losing its founder in 1887, the firm maintained a lasting legacy as a cornerstone of 19th Century American luxury retail and fine porcelain distribution, before eventually succumbing to the Great Depression and closing in 1934.
